22 At that time Abimelech, with Phicol the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do. 23 Now swear to me here by God that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have kept faith with you, so you will keep faith with me and with the country where you are a resident alien."It seems a bit strange that Abimelech is so willing to make a peace treaty with Abraham, especially after Abraham almost ruined Abimelech's nation by telling him that Sarah was his sister. After looking at various sources, I found out that Abimelech wasn't the name of one specific king, but the title of the ruler of Gerar, similar to how 'Pharaoh' is the title of the ruler of Egypt. Abimelech says to Abraham in verse 22 that "God is with you in everything you do," because it is obvious to Abimelech that the Lord is working through Abraham.
Abraham swore to uphold the treaty, then brought up the subject of a water well that Abimelech's servants took. Abimelech helps clear up this dispute, and Abraham gave Abimelech sheep and cattle, as proof of their peace. Abraham had set aside seven ewe lambs, and Abimelech didn't understand why. Abraham says that they will serve as witnesses that he dug that well. And after all this was settled, Abraham planted a tamarish tree there and worshiped the Lord.
33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he worshiped the LORD, the Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham lived as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines for many days.
