Genesis 1: The Creation

This entire passage basically sums up God's creation of Earth, light, sky, land, vegetation, fruit-bearing plants, creatures of land & sea, and last but not least, Adam & Eve. God blessed Adam & Eve and tells them he has created all of these things for their benefit.


Verse 1 states "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". Although this is 'the beginning' it is obvious that God already exists. He was there before the beginning, and He will be there after the end. The first thing he created was the distinction between the holy and the earthly.


Verse 2-4 talk about darkness, light, and the first day. In verse 4, God associates light with goodness. But before light existed, there was darkness, which being the opposite of light (goodness), can therefore be associated with the opposite of good, which is bad. So on the first day, God created the distinction between good and bad, and at the same time, creating day and night. This occurs on the 'first day'.


Verse 6-8 are very vague, stating only that God created 'sky' to separate "water from water". Digging deeper, I believe this meant that he created earth's atmosphere and made sure that our atmosphere stayed on Earth, instead of being sucked out to outer space. Therefore, he made a means for us to breathe. This occurs on the 'second day'.


Verse 9-13 shows when God created sea and land. And on that land he created seed-bearing plants and fruit trees that bore seed. This was very calculated, because if he created vegetation that didn't bear seeds, they would die very quickly and not be self-sustainable. This occurs on the 'third day'.


Verse 14-19 tells us that God created the sun and the moon and the stars. He didn't do this carelessly, but obviously a lot of work was put into this. Verse 14 states that the lights "will serve as signs for festivals and for days and years". So when he created these lights, he also created the years, the solstices, the eclipses, and all these wonderful things. This occurs on the 'fourth day'.


Verse 20-23 talks about sea creatures and winged creatures. I like how these two types of animals are grouped together, but separate from land creatures, because there are quite similar. In a sense, sea creatures float through water just as winged creatures float through air. He tells them to multiply, so that they may be self-sustainable and He wouldn't have to create new creatures every so often. This occurs on the 'fifth day'.


Verse 24-25 is similar to verse 20-23, but this time he creates land creatures. In verse 26-27, God created man in his image, one female and one male. In verse 28, He blesses the two and tell them "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it", therefore making them the top of the food chain, respectively. This occurs on the 'sixth day'.


One thing that came to mind as I read this passage was how amazing it was that all of this happens in the span of 6 days. I realized this was one of the main reasons there was debate from scientists. But, I realize this is God we are talking about. He existed before the beginning. Who knows how long he has been here? One day for him could be the time span of a snap of a finger, or eons. And even if those 'days' were measured by a span on 24 hours, do you not believe that God was capable?
